The Rock’n’Popmuseum is a surprising cultural stop during your bikepacking trip. The museum tells the story of more than a century of popular music and combines it with interactive installations and historical objects.

100 years of pop music
The Rock’n’Popmuseum opened on July 21, 2004, and is dedicated to the history of popular music of the twentieth century. The museum is unique in Germany because it focuses entirely on the cultural history of rock and pop music.
In the permanent exhibition, visitors follow the development of popular music over more than one hundred years. It is not only about the music itself, but also about its cultural impact: from youth and subcultures to technology, media, and live performances.
What makes the museum special is the way music is presented. Through multimedia installations, visitors can not only see music, but also hear and experience it. The museum uses interactive elements that allow visitors to navigate through the history of pop music themselves.
The current exhibition is organized thematically. Instead of a strict timeline, it is structured around several themes, such as:
the origins of pop music
rebellion and youth culture
performance and stage culture
This thematic approach shows how broad and diverse pop culture is.
Origins
The museum is housed in a former turbine hall of the Van Delden textile company. The industrial location gives the building a distinctive atmosphere.
The idea for the museum came from Gronau-born rock musician Udo Lindenberg, who took the initiative to create a museum dedicated to pop music in the city.
Due to its location close to the Dutch border, musical collaboration between Germany and the Netherlands also plays a role in the museum. The region around Gronau and Enschede has had a vibrant music scene since the early twentieth century.
A visit to the Rock’n’Popmuseum is therefore a great break between cycling kilometers: step off the bike, listen to music, and find some inspiration before continuing your ride.
